Limoncello -- flavorful liqueur from the land of style
The image of the Sfusato Amalfitano lemon can be found on wallpaper,
plates, bowls, and platters, paintings, linens, and other ornate items found in the Italian household. They are used in many recipes, but its peel is famous for making Limoncello.
Amalfi is a province of Salerno. It sits on the western Italian coast in the region of Campania, overlooking the Gulf of Salerno. It is a short drive north from Naples. The Sfusato Amalfitano lemon is grown in this area at the foot of Monte Cerreto.
Limoncello is a cordial made with the zest of these special lemons. Since it uses little to no juice, the liqueur is smooth and sweet without being overtly astringent. It gets is bright yellow color from the pigment in the zest. The colored part of the citrus skin is peeled away from the fruit and soaked in very strong alcohol until most of the oil and color has been extracted. This strong liquid is then diluted and bottled.
Limoncello is a wonderful way to end a meal. It is the perfect offering to guests because of its bright lemon flavor and smooth presence in the mouth. It can be found in many highball and martini recipes as well.
