A Personal Message To Libations Customers
From Kathy:

I would like to take this opportunity to let you know that as of November 20th, Libations Wine & Spirits has new owners-April and Kirk Carvatt. They are wonderful people, who I believe will carry on the great traditions and customer service that Libations has developed over the many years as your neighborhood "greatest place to shop!" I was very selective in my decision about finding people who would continue to work for you-the loyal family of Libations customers-our greatest asset. I ask you to welcome them and support them over the coming years.
It has been the greatest professional pleasure of my life to develop and operate Libations over the past 10 years. I genuinely feel that great friendships have been created, and will miss you immensely. Nevertheless, I felt it was a good time for me to move on to other endeavors, and allow fresh energy and ideas to prevail in the changing environment.
All of us look forward to a smooth transition and continued great relationships, service, and selection for your uninterrupted enjoyment. Please take the time to introduce yourself to April & Kirk. I wish you all the very best for the future, and thank you for contributing to Libations success with your loyalty. I cannot thank you enough for a "great ride."

Remember-Libations is still YOUR store!

Forever Friends-Kathy

Petite sirah, son of syrah, leaves inky impression
Ask any winemaker why they vinify petite sirah. Their answer won't address profit margins. They won't tell you it's to boost their reputation or satisfy market demand. They vinify petite sirah because they love the varietal.
Many of us have never heard of petite sirah. Just as many mistakenly think it is syrah. According to the California Wine Institute, vineyard acreage of cabernet tops 75,000 acres and merlot and zinfandel reach over 50,000 acres each. Only about 6,500 acres of petite sirah grows in California.
Despite its obscurity, there is a decent selection of petite sirah on our shelves. Petite sirah's rightful name - Durif - is a cross between syrah and peloursin, an old, obscure French varietal. Wines made from petite sirah are always a saturated purple color, with dense notes of blueberry, blackberry, smoke, and black pepper. They can be rather tannic and usually improve with a little breathing. The concentration of fruit compliments the tannic nature.
Some petite sirah comes from 'old vines,' which offer dense fruit flavors, mineral hints, and a cellar worthy structure. Many old vine vineyards are a hodge-podge of varietals, harvested together to create a 'field blend.' Old vines produce a fraction of their younger counterparts. Grape clusters decline significantly once a vine reaches 25 - 30 years old. Once cluster production slows, profit minded growers tear up and replace vines, usually with whatever variety is in vogue at the time.
Fortunately, there are passionate winemakers who love old vine zinfandel, grenache, carignane, mourvèdré, and petite sirah, regardless of the market trends. These bottles grace our shelves and wine lists because of a winemaker's affection. For the savvy consumer, non-mainstream varietals like petite sirah offer high quality wines at reasonable prices.
