French wine, the benchmark
Europe has been making wine for several thousand years. Each region has its own unique history, influencing the overall timeline of winemaking in its own way. France impacted the European wine industry and eventually the global wine industry as a leader in quality and consistency.
Like most European regions, the French name their wine after the village, rather than the grape. The aspect of the land was the one thing that never changed. Vines can be pulled up and planted with other grape varieties, winemakers would come and go, but the land was always steadfast. As time went on, growers discovered by trial and error which grapes grew best in their region. The village name on the bottle eventually became synonymous with a particular style. Fans of a wine region did not care what grape made the wine, they were fond of the region's flavor. This allowed producers to plant a variety of grapes in order to hedge against losing an entire crop to bad weather.
Over the centuries some regions were unwavering in what they planted, while others experimented. Eventually the government stepped in and began to legislate what grapes were grown in an area, minimum alcohol levels, maximum yields, and other production details.
French wines became the benchmark that all other wines were measured against. Even to this day, with billions of bottles of wine being produced in the new world, France still continues to be the standard of excellence.
Many domestic shoppers shy away from French wines because the grapes are not stated on the label. Since each wine area is required to make wine from specific grape varieties, shopping for French wine is much easier than most people think. Once you learn what grapes are used in a particular region, you can more or less guess what is in the bottle consistently.
