ABC: Anything But Chardonnay
Chardonnay has become wildly popular in the American market. Chardonnay is the most widely planted grape in California. There are over 100,000 acres devoted to chardonnay vines in California, overshadowing statistics for both merlot and cabernet sauvignon.
While we are quenching our thirst with millions of bottles of chardonnay, there is a growing trend toward drinking anything but chardonnay. In fact, this trend often excludes pinot grigio and sauvignon blanc from the club as well. With dozens of white grapes on the market, exploring unusual white wines can be a delightful journey.
Many bottles considered unusual by Americans, have been around in their respective villages for hundreds, if not thousands of years. For example, Spain produces a white blend from the grape verdejo (ver-DAY-ho), which has been vinified for over a thousand years. This wine is named and comes from the region called Rueda (roo-A-duh) and tastes of apples and lemon. Verdejo is not to be confused with verdello, a white grape grown in Australia, which produces a melon flavored wine with a richer mouthfeel.
The highly aromatic grape called torrontes, came to Argentina at the turn of the twentieth century from ancient European roots. It is rich with notes of peaches and honeysuckle. It is forgotten about on the continent, but is a signature grape for Argentina. Viognier (vee-ohn-YAY), another fragrant, exotic, white variety exploding with notes of apricots and white flowers, comes from the historic Rhone Valley of France and now finds a home in California. It can often be found blended with marsanne and rousanne, two more white grapes from the Rhone Valley.
Italy has so much more to offer in the realm of white wine than pinot grigio. Vernaccia San Gimignano, Soave, Gavi, Cortese, Orvieto, and more. Verdicchio (vehr-DEEK-kyoh) is a bright, yellow-green colored wine with high acidity. It is made from a grape of the same name that grows in the Marche (mar-KAY) region of Italy and is perfect for fish, chicken or shellfish.
Expand your horizons as the weather grows warmer and take a chance on a bottle of white wine that you have never tried before. You may be surprised at how interesting and refreshing whites outside of the chardonnay mainstream can be.
