Discover Why Unoaked Chardonnay Is Different
The American consumer has a big thirst for chardonnay.
We created our own style of chardonnay that caught on throughout the new world.
It is so popular that it has dominated the
market for almost two decades.
The recipe for this chardonnay wines requires lots and lots of new,
expensive French oak barrels.
The new French oak barrels impart notes of caramel, nutmeg,
Indian spices, and pineapple.
Oak has become extremely popular with domestic winemakers.
This has driven the price up,
to the point that some winemakers order the oak staves and instead of making them into barrels, they grind them up and add them to the wine. You get more wood flavor for your money that way.
As with any style, eventually someone starts doing the opposite,
which creates a new sensation.
When it comes to unoaked chardonnay,
this trend isn't a new one.
Using old oak barrels, glass lined or stainless steel tanks to ferment
or age chardonnay has been going on for a long time.
Oaky flavors were never in style in the old world,
so progressive winemakers didn't have to look far to
create a chardonnay that was completely different than what we were used to.
Unoaked chardonnay is a beauty all on its own.
Chardonnay is one of the primary grapes used in Champagne.
It is also the star of Burgundy and Chablis.
Call it naked, virgin, or unoaked, this chardonnay is bright, clean, and fresh.
Offering notes of golden and green apples, lemon, lime, melon, peaches and apricots.
Virgin chardonnay is crisp and refreshing.
Many winemakers take it easy on the malolactic fermentaion too,
allowing the mouthwatering fruit acidity to shine.
Fresh fruit flavors and good acidity make unoaked chardonnay the perfect food wine.
