Happy Halloween

This Wednesday, 10/31 we pour four libations
for your Halloween celebrations
Evil Cabernet Sauvignon, Australia
The grapes came from some of Australia's most famous regions. McLaren Vale 38%, Barossa 37% and Pyrenees 25% create a ripeness and wicked good red. One time when evil turns out to be exceptional.

Casillero del Diablo Carmenere, Chile
Don Melchor, founder of Concha y Toro, discovered his vineyard workers were sampling his greatest wines. To discourage them Don Melchor spread a rumor that his cellar was the Casillero del Diablo, the cellar of the devil. It seem to work and over one hundred years later the legend lives on.

Pumpkin Spice Liqueur with Apple Cider
We thought this was a scrumptious combination! The Pumpkin Spice Liqueur is delightful in hot or cold apple cider. It is perfect for Halloween and makes a great holiday drink for Thanksgiving, Christmas, entertaining, and when you jsut feel like having an adult version of apple pie, hold the Cool Whip.

Vampire Merlot, Paso Robles, California
At the completion of the aging process, this merlot was carefully blended with 8% cabernet sauvignon for added depth and structure, as well as 8% zinfandel, which adds a spicy note on the palate. Approachable now, Vampire Merlot is perfectly balanced for a few years in the crypt.

Carménère is incognito

Lucky forcarménère it was carried to Chile in the mid-eighteen hundreds by wine loving immigrants, looking for a better life in the new world. Once one of the approved grapes of Bordeaux, carménère was thought to be extinct up until about a decade ago. Carménère fell out of favor in Bordeaux and was never re-planted after phylloxera struck the vineyards in the 1860s.
Carménère's history in Chile started about the same time that phylloxera, the aphid that sucks the nutrients from the roots of a grapevine, wiped out most of the vineyards of France. In the mid-eighteen hundreds, in an attempts to flaunt their wealth, the successful business men of Chile created estates for producing wine, similar to the grand Chateaux of Bordeaux. These new Chilean chateaux attracted some of Bordeaux's most prestigious winemaking families. Seeking a phylloxera free land to grow their beloved grapes, they brought to the new world their favorite Bordeaux grape varieties, cabernet sauvignon, merlot, malbec, cabernet franc, and carménère. Mistaken for merlot, carmenere was grown in Chile for over a century incognito.
Now thought to be completely extinct in France, carménère has not only found a new home in Chile, but may be Chile's signature grape. Carménère is prized for its deep color, soft tannins, ripe blackberry flavors, and touch of herbaceousness. Many bottles of Chilean merlot still unknowingly contain carménère, since one of the only ways to differentiate between the two grapes is through genetic testing.
