Roussanne
Rousanne is an rare and exotic grape, with a beautiful auburn color when ripe. The word for reddish-brown in French is roux, which might be where roussanne's name originated. It has been growing in France's Rhone Valley for hundreds of years and is usually blended a member of a trio with marsanne and viognier.
Roussanne has been showing up in small quantities in the new world as a boutique grape.
It is rarely found bottled as a single variety, because it is difficult to grow. It ripens unevenly and is susceptible to mildew and rot. It is usually blended with the traditional grapes marsanne and viognier, but can also be found blended with other white varieties.
Cuttings of roussanne were imported to the US from France in the 1980s. Eventually the vines were genetically tested and many were found to be viognier. For this reason, most growers in the new world now take rootstock from only a few vineyards. These vineyards offer certified clones, which were tested and guaranteed to be genuine.
Roussanne is extremely aromatic with notes of honeysuckle and perfume. Its flavors boast notes of honey, apricots, and poached pears. Roussanne possess a good acidic structure that viognier does not. It can be rich and luscious in warmer regions and elegant with higher acidity and mineral tones in cooler growing areas.
Single variety bottlings of roussanne can be pricy and uncommon. Savvy winemakers use it as a blending grape to add character to their white blends, a little roussanne goes a long way.
