Spain creates wines for our tastes
Spain's wine history spans millenniums, yet their wine industry has been writing an important new chapter in the last decade. Even though Spain is steeped in old world lineage, it is considered a new world producer by many.
Spain earns the right to be compared to the likes of California, Australia, and South America because of its use of new oak barrels, especially a combination of French and American cooperage. Plus, new world wines, just like Spanish wines, are known for fruit forward profiles because of their plentiful sun and ample ripening.
Spain offers a dichotomy of worlds.
It is a landscape dotted with ancient castles.
They were used to defend its many kingdoms during Medieval times and were always surrounded by vineyards. Tenth generation wine producers live on the same estate that their ancestors farmed hundreds of years ago. While they guard the family name on their wine label, they look to the United States as their biggest market. Modern wineries and young winemakers create a fresh, new approach, formulating the perfect bottle of wine to please our California-calibrated palates.
Some Spanish growing regions have been around since the time of Noah (credited by some scholars for bringing vinifera to the Iberian Peninsula). While established regions polish their new status as a contender in the global market, new grape growing areas are created each season. Bulk wine areas, like Campo de Borja, Jumilla, Yecla, and La Mancha are retooling and replanting. Their new business plan is to forgo profuse amounts of jug wine to focus on better quality grapes like garnacha (grenache), tempranillo, monastrell (mourvèdre), cabernet sauvignon, and merlot.
Everyday selections are impressive, many finding their way to us at $12 a bottle or under. Up and coming areas like Ribera del Duero and Priorato offer selections that compare to the quality of established areas like Rioja.
While this hot, dry land is known for its sultry reds, its cool mountain and coastal areas produce delightful white wines. From the sparkling wine called Cava to the elegant and luscious albarino to the refreshing Rueda, Spain's whites are worth exploring.
Spain's long-established wine culture combines the savvy and experience of generations of winemakers with a progressive mind-set. A perfect recipe to capture our taste buds here in the United States.
