Viognier
Viognier is exotic and perfume-like, offering lush flavors.
It comes to us from the Rhône Valley of France,
where it is blended with marsanne, white grenache, and the illusive roussanne.
In the States, you find viognier as a 'varietal' wine more often than in a blend
with other grapes. Domestic producers will blend it with Rhône varieties,
but also dabble in non-traditional partners like chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, and chenin blanc.
Viognier has a long history in Côte Rôtie, France.
A little viognier (up to 20%) is blended into the syrah of this region.
The Aussies, always loving a good French blend, embrace this duo as well.
Solo it offers a fragrant aroma of flowers, honey, and perfume.
It fills the mouth with rich flavors of apricots, honeysuckle, melon,
and perfectly ripe peaches. The finish is layered and long.
It often is lower in acidity, which creates a round sensation in the mouth.
There are a handful of grapes that are so high maintenance that their fussiness
affects their price. Viognier is one of them; pinot noir is another.
These two particular grapes are notorious for underperforming when the conditions
are a little challenging.
Chardonnay vineyards exceed viognier by mind boggling amounts,
yet viognier finds a respectable niche in our domestic market.
Refreshing, soft in acidity, and delightfully fruity, viognier
is a great change of pace. Look to the 'Rhône Rangers,'
a group of California producers that embrace the recipes of
France's Rhône Valley for impressive examples of this grape variety.
Other producers with an artisan philosophy offer great values in this category as well.
More than just a member of their portfolio, viognier for many producers is
a special offering that expresses their affection for this finicky, yet enchanting grape.
