Tasting and reading are the key to wine knowledge
Wine tastings are an excellent opportunity to learn more about wine. The folks behind the table pouring you a sample are very knowledgeable about their products. They can often tell you about the vintage for that the region, whether or not the wine was aged in oak barrels, what foods pairs well, and other facts about the wine. The problem with wine tastings is that they can be crowded and the salespeople don't have much time to spend with each person.
While I encourage you to attend wine tastings to broaden your knowledge, there is another effective way to learn about wine. Read a wine book. Tasting wine at an event presents examples you can buy at your local store, but reading about wine imparts knowledge that is timeless. Reading will allow you to shop by region and that is one of the things that makes a person wine savvy.
Now here is the hard part. Not all wine books are created equal. Just like any other subject, you can find fantastic books, books that are worthless, and everything in between. I have shelves of wine books that are difficult to read, but I also have a nice collection of books that are indispensable.
The New Spain, by John Radford is ideal if you want to study Spanish wine. Filled with beautiful photographs and well written chapters, this book takes you through the history of Spain via its vineyards. History and wine walk hand and hand and this book is a fine example of how interesting the tale of wine can be.
Vino Italiano, The Regional Wines of Italy, by Joseph Bastianich and David Lynch (not the film maker). This book takes a historical view of wine from the onset of the industrial revolution in Italy. It is genuine, entertaining, and informative.
The Complete Idiots Guide To Wine Basics by Tara Q Thomas is a great book for the novice. Thomas's prose is easy to read, yet very descriptive. Open the book up anywhere, read a passage, and learn something new.
The Emperor Of Wine, The Rise Of Robert M. Parker Jr., And The Reign Of American Taste by Elin McCoy is a mouthful, so you might have to spit (Parker joke). If you think you know a thing or two about Californian and French wine, this book will pull all the pieces together for you. It drops names like a Hollywood gossip columnist. Well written and fairly balanced, it gives an insight into how Parker's success and our own palates have been honed.
Of course there are many more books out there that are worth reading or owning. This handful of suggestions is a great place to start. I use the first two as reference books. They are indispensable if you want to study either country region by region, which means drinking wines from those regions after you've read the chapter. Thomas' book is a great book for beginners and McCoy's book is titillating for those who want the inside scoop on how the American wine market evolved. Grab a glass of wine and relax with one of these books and you'll be surprised how quickly your wine knowledge grows.
