Priorato
Priorato means priory, a place where monks live and work. According to legend, a local sheep herder dreamt he witnessed angels descending from heaven on a long staircase. He shared his vision with his local priest and soon the area was investigated by Carthusian monks. They set up the Priorato de Scala Dei, the "Priory of the Stairway of God" in the twelfth century to be close to this holy portal.
Historically, where there are monks, there is commerce and soon villages sprung up around the priory. Today this wine DO contains eleven villages, all surrounding the now retired priory. The monks have left, but the cavas or wine cellars used by the disciplined sect have been utilized by the vignerons who remained.
The Priorato DO is surrounded by the Tarragona DO, but is explicitly different in climate and soil. Priorato is very close to the sea and enjoys coastal breezes. Its terrain is mountainous, with natural amphitheaters, varying micro-climates, and steep cliffs. The traditional grapes of the area are two reds, garnacha (grenache) and carinena (carignan). A small percentage of white grapes are grown in this area as well, mostly garnacha blanca, macabeo and Pedro Ximenez.
In the 1980 a consortium of producers began planting French varieties in the area. Because of the alluvium soil, heavy with granite and schist, the yields are naturally low. The collective efforts of the new Priorato producers embrace these meager yields, to promote the area as an superior growing region. Garnacha and carinena are still the main varieties, but cabernet sauvignon, syrah and merlot are being grown and vinified under this DO as well.
