We at Libations want to keep you informed of events in the community that may be of interest to you. These events include our fund raising activities, wine and beer tastings, etc.

Recently, Centennial Liquor and Pharmacy has petitioned Centennial for a liquor license on the northwest corner of Arapahoe and Parker Roads. Centennial Liquor and Pharmacy will be a store similar to Walgreens, but will primarily sell alcohol.

Our devoted customers know we carefully choose each brand we carry. We sample almost every item we stock to ensure we offer the better quality beers, wines and spirits to our customers. There are already two stores at this intersection. A third store will not initiate more alcohol sales from the public. A third store will take sales from the two existing stores.

The consumers in the area have to ask themselves:

Why do we really need one more store?

Will a third store benefit the community somehow?

Will an additional store drive the prices up in our area by putting more pressure on the existing stores to make ends meet in an already difficult economic time?
(Remember, margins in the liquor industry are very small.)

Will having liquor sold in a drug store make it more accessible to our teenagers? (They will be able to walk freely around the store with no age restrictions.)

We believe this would greatly affect our small business. Our loyal customers can truly help. We have petitions available to sign at the store. We will be attending the public hearing on August 20, 2009 at 6 p.m. at the Centennial Civic Center, 13133 East Arapahoe Road. We ask that you join us on this evening in opposition of the license being issued.

Brazilian Wine

Believe it or not, Brazil is the fifth largest producer of wine in the Southern Hemisphere. It is outpaced by Australia, Argentina, Chile, and South Africa. Brazil produces more wine than New Zealand. Brazil is expected to have strong growth in the next decade.

Brazilian wine history sounds like many other new world growing regions. Europeans brought vinifera grape vines with them, with all their other cherished possessions, to the new world. These first vineyards date back to the sixteenth century. Many of these planting regions were not suitable for grape growing. Over the centuries, growers figured out the best places to plant grapes, so they would flourish. Many Portuguese traveled to this new world during this time and brought their favorite grapes. For centuries Portuguese grapes were the most prominent varieties found in the Brazilian vineyards.

During the mid-nineteenth century all of South America saw a large immigration of Italians and Germans. This new influx saw a change in the varieties grown in the vineyards. The wine industry in Europe was experiencing a blight from the root eating louse called phyloxera. Because the vineyards in Europe were dying, many vineyard workers fled to the new world with their favorite wine grape rootstocks in hand. It took horticulturists a few decades to figure out the cause the blight. In the meantime the new world began to explode with viniculture.

This historical blight was over one hundred years ago. Since that time the wine industry has undergone a huge Renaissance. The invention of refrigerated shipping, automated machinery, sophisticated measurements, and ample and widely available high tech training have assisted the grape growing world to produce consistently, high quality wine.

Brazil has enjoyed the attention of the global wine market makers in the last fifteen years. They have brought their expertise and money to this country to pursue her winemaking potential. Today sparkling wines are the darlings of Brazilian wine production. Brazil also focuses on the French varieties we have all come to love, such as chardonnay, merlot, and cabernet.
