Sonoma County Wine

The Gold Rush wasn't the only thing that drew fortune seekers to California. Thousands of immigrants traveled to California to prosper in her fertile valleys during this era. As soon as someone proclaimed there was gold to be had in the mysterious new land, European immigrants were there, planting grape vines.
Sonoma was an impressive land and those generations of farmers from Italy, Germany, Hungary, and other European countries wasted no time establishing vineyards and wineries. Haraszthy Agoston, a Hungarian immigrant, bought the existing Salvador Vallejo vineyard in 1855 in the Sonoma Valley. The grapes planted there were not the better quality vinifera species, so Agoston tore up the vineyard and replanted with European varieties. (Vinifera grapes are the varieties we all know as wine grapes, with their familiar names, chardonnay, syrah, merlot, etc.) He renamed his estate Buena Vista. Agoston is known as the Father of the California wine industry because he established the first vineyard with vinifera varieties and because of his study and proliferation of European wine grapes in California.
Unfortunately, the Californian wine industry of the 1850s had two big problems. Little did these growers know, but the grapevine cuttings they had brought from their beloved homelands were doomed to be devoured by a root eating louse, phyloxera. Phyloxera would cut vinifera's lifespan to less than ten years. It would not be until the early twentieth century that they would remedy this problem. Once the fix was found, vinifera grapes were able to grow and flourish for decades in California's fertile soil.
The other thing that inhibited California in becoming a global contender in the wine industry was prohibition. Right about the time they figured out how to grow vinifera in soil with phyloxera, the making of wine became prohibited. Some vineyard owners chose to preserve their grapes and make raisins, grape juice, and sacramental wine. Many tore up their vines and planted fruit trees. Prohibition was repealed by the time the US joined the Allies in World War II, but it was not until the boom of the post-war economy that commercial wineries started showing up in Sonoma County. In fact many would say Sonoma would not embrace its wine grape growing potential until the 1960s. Half of all producers in Sonoma Valley have only been in existence for a little more than twenty years.
Today Sonoma has hundreds of growers, over thousands of acres. It boasts thirteen appellations (American Viticultural Area--AVA). Alexander Valley, Bennett Valley (one of its newest appellations), Chalk Hill, Dry Creek Valley, Green Valley of Russian River Valley, Knights Valley, Los Carneros, Northern Sonoma, Rockpile, Russian River Valley, Sonoma Coast, Sonoma Valley, and Sonoma Mountain are the official AVA of Sonoma County. The warm days and cool nights are perfect for growing wine grapes. Its smaller appellations are even more prestigious. Explore the wines of Sonoma and you'll find a remarkable level of quality.

Every Wednesday from 4:30pm to 7:00pm we pour samples for you. Join us on selected Fridays too.
