Summer Yummers
Read Jacuzzi History In California
Wednesday, July 8, 2009 stop by to taste Summer Yummers!
We've selected four wines that either are very thirst quenching
(i.e., the gewurz and the riesling)
or very food friendly, with lighter bodies.
Riesling is known for its ability to pair with just about any type of fare.
Gewurztraminer is a rich and floral wine,
perfect for lighter summer fare.
Both offer thirst quenching properties and
are very refreshing when chilled.
The Jacuzzi Sangiovese and Jacuzzi Barbera
are both made from Italian grapes that
are bred and grown to pair with food.
Both reds are lighter in body,
yet possess focused flavors,
ripe acidity, and polished tannins.
Their elegant style does not overpower the food,
but rather complement it.
Their mouthwatering acidity and
softer profile make them easy drinking when it is hot.

The Jacuzzi trek to America started in 1907, when Valeriano and Francesco Jacuzzi, sons of Giovanni and Teresa Jacuzzi, immigrated to southern California. In 1911 their father, a skilled wood worker and vineyard farmer joined them from Italy. Two weeks of California's beautiful weather and booming economy was enough to convince Giovanni that his sons would never return to Italy, so Giovanni returned with Valeriano,
to gather up the rest of the family and bring them to California.
World War I intervened and the trip was delayed until the war's end. During this time, Valeriano met Giuseppina and fell in love, married and had their first child. Valeriano's new family, his parents, and remaining siblings departed from Italy in 1920.
Soon after their arrival in early 1921, Valeriano started working with his brothers at their Jacuzzi Brothers factory. A tragic crash of Jacuzzi's first enclosed monoplane took several lives, including Valeriano's brother, Giocondo. It was this loss that caused Giovanni to insist that his sons cease making planes. Valeriano moved his family to Northern California and purchased a 161-acre farm in Contra Costa County.
During the depression Valeriano, with help from his older children, planted a portion of the open farm fields with grapes. The vineyard was planted with Zinfandel, Carignane and Mourvedre, which he sold for $30-$35 a ton.
In 1937, Valeriano returned to work with his brothers at Jacuzzi Brothers, Inc. located in Berkeley, California. They manufactured well water pumps and eventually, the bath and spa that bear their name. Valeriano and his family continued to own vineyard and to this day his ancestors tend vines and make wine with the same passion that Giovanni Jacuzzi brought with him from Italy.
