Novelty wine labels benefit from the global grape glut
Labels adorning wine bottles have been proper and organized for decades.
The line drawing of a Chateau with all the government approved regional names
has been the standard. Most folks paid little attention to these two dimensional
renderings, but expected them to be there just the same. This was such a standard
in wine packaging wine producers had catalogs with hundreds of line drawing to
choose from, representing every Chateau façade that could be conjured up.
If the bottle did not include an image of the Chateau, it probably offered regal
looking text spelling out the regional name. Chianti, Rioja, Bordeaux, these names
were often clad with sturdy serifs, imprinted in shiny gold ink.
Times have changed and the regional name on the label is not the attraction it used to be.
In fact, the more whimsical and artistic the label, the more convincing the sale is

for many consumers. Of course the label still discloses all the information required
by the government, from region of production to distribution chain, but it is often
the eye-catching artwork that draws us in.
These days there is another facet to label artwork. The wine industry is experiencing
a global wine glut. Since so much wine is available, producers, importers, and even
wine store owners are buying up the excess and creating their own wine line-ups.
With all this wine in need of a bottle and label to call home, any niche or topic
is fair game for the label. We see animals, flowers, cartoon characters,
and even works of fine art on the front of wine bottles.
Holiday shoppers can find bottles graced with an image that reflects the season.
Some of these non-traditional labels are available all year, but enjoy a boon
in sales near their corresponding holiday. Others labels are released specifically
for a particular holiday.
These novelty labels often contain quality juice. The global grape gut allows producers
to bottle fine wine, clad with unconventional images or themes outside of their
usual products. Some labels may be comical or racy, still others may be serious.
These new and interesting images add another fun-filled aspect to drinking wine.
Support a non-profit, pitch an inside joke, or follow a holiday theme;
the wine inside is made from the same grapes, the packaging just reflects a new
mindset in marketing.
