Winemaking; an attractive career change

If you would ask people what they would want to do for a living, if they could do anything at all, many would reply they would want to be an actor, a professional athlete, musician, or even manage a professional ball team. These jobs are fantasy jobs for many. Sure you can do any of these things on an amateur level, but the big brass ring would mean making a whopping salary and long shadow cast by bright limelights.

Some who have reached this level of fame and fortune look to broaden their horizons with yet another line of work, that of winemaker. There are probably a few who like to cash in on their name recognition, but many have truly fallen in love with the idea of making wine. Whether it be for just their family and friends, or as a commercial endeavor, winemaking among the famous has become a popular activity.

Francis Ford Coppola purchased a historic parcel of land and this began his journey into the world of winemaking in 1975. On this land stood the historic home of Gustave Niebaum, a pioneer of California winemaking. The vineyards where known for producing some of the best wine in Napa Valley. Over the years Coppola acquired more land and has built himself an empire. He now leaves the winemaking up to an employee, but the passion for making wine has not diminished. He also owns property in Alexander Valley, where his Director's Series wines are produced.

There are others who have made a respectable effort in wine production. Fess Parker makes a wine that can be found on the shelves in Colorado and so does Sting. Arnold Palmer and Greg Norman have wine labels as well. Norman's wines are widely available in Colorado.

Carmen Policy, who lead the San Francisco 49ers to five Super Bowl wins, left football after buying land from Robert Mondavi. He and his wife are hands on in the nurturing and production of their own wine. But don't look for Policy's label on the shelves anytime soon, He owns ten acres and produces a mere two hundred cases annually. Policy is happy to produce enough for family and friends.

Winemaking is similar to cooking. You need to be creative, organized, plan ahead, and recognize the importance of high quality, fresh ingredients. Some, made famous in the entertainment industry have chosen to open a restaurant with their signature, other choose to pursue winemaking as their gastronomic outlet.
