Merlot
Merlot is an icon in the US market. Just like the California styled chardonnay, with its buttery tones and oaky nuances, the California version of merlot saturated the market and became the default formula for all domestic merlot. This recipe yields a softer, riper red. Its market was the red wine drinker looking for a less tannic wine, softer in acidity. For several years now domestic winemakers created single variety labels of merlot, with a smooth fabric and ripe, soft structure.
Slowly but surely, as this style of merlot became the norm, there was a push back from some winemakers who allowed their merlots to have a little bit more umph. The soft, smooth merlots now share the shelves with a style that has a little more tannins, with a touch more fruit acid.
Merlot is the most widely planted grape in Bordeaux. It is one of the permitted red grape varieties in Bordeaux, the others being cabernet sauvignon, malbec, cabernet franc, and petit verdot. It is found blended with cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc throughout the world. From Australia to the foothills of the Italian Alps, to Argentina, merlot is grown and blended with other red grapes, or vinified and bottled solo.
Merlot is the perfect grape to cultivate with cabernet sauvignon. Merlot ripens early, while cabernet sauvignon ripens late. Pairing these two grapes insures against losing an entire crop to bad weather at harvest. (Perhaps the French were on to something.)
Merlot has a thin skin, which imparts less tannins into the resulting wine. Cabernet sauvignon has a thick skin, producing more tannic juice. Merlot blends well with many different grapes because of its demure character. Over the years, merlot has been sneaking into many blends, because wine drinkers have been wanting less astringency and more ripeness.
The rest of the world embraced tannic, acidic wines, while the Coca-Cola generation here in the US demanded our wines to be ripe and smooth. Since the American market is so massive, the rest of the world has been vinifying wine with ripe profiles and a soft mouthfeel, to take advantage of demand for wine in the US.
Of course you'll still find tannic reds with lots of acidity, but our palates have influenced the global market and more and more producers are opting for the fruit-driven styles. Merlot has helped usher in this change in styles. Once considered a blending grape and looked upon by many as inferior to its vineyard neighbor, cabernet sauvignon, now merlot is sharing the lime light.
