Mountain building creates a setting for perfect wine grapes
Orogeny means mountain building episode. These geographic movements have shaped our landscape and waterways and have become an important aspect in global agriculture. When it comes to wine grapes, orogeny plays a very important role.
Some grapevines are poised on steep mountain terraces, where vineyard managers use harnesses and climbing equipment to tend and harvest the grapes. Some vineyards are rooted in alluvium soil, the rocky debris of a large mountain, now crumbled into a wide scenic fan. It is widely accepted grapes love well drained, rocky soil, with poor tilth, the places where most crops will not grow. Grapevines cling to the sides of cliffs and have deep plunging root systems.
It is not just the incline and pour soil grapes enjoy when growing on the side of a mountain.
Grapes love to be windswept, keeping their berries fungus free.

They like the daily extremes in temperatures mountainous regions offer as well. South facing slopes are prime grape growing real estate and you will often find these areas neatly combed with rows of vines.
There is a science to watering grape vines where the mountains end and the valley begins. Valley floor vineyards experience controlled irrigation, the run-off from the mountains snowy melt. This type of irrigation requires holding back and diverting the run-off rain and snow melt. These reserves of water are then used for drip irrigation, a stingy supply of moisture that barely keeps the vines alive. Forced into a state of preservation, the vines grow better quality fruit. This type of irrigation is used throughout the world, anywhere the mountains allow the growers to capture the water.
Some mountain ranges create more than just an opportunity to control the amount of moisture a vine enjoys. There are distinct differences in terroir on one side of the mountains than the other. For example, the Cascades show a rainy environment to the west, yet their eastern slope is very dry, a desirable condition for growing grapes.
Many mountainous growing regions have their own appellation, to call attention to their higher quality. We all know about Napa Valley, but did you know the mountains surrounding this idyllic growing region are all awarded their own designations? Each region is allowed to use the Napa Valley name, yet their mountain designation is considered even more prestigious.
Examples like this can be found all over the grape growing world. Lake County is another example of mountains growing great wine grapes. High Valley AVA contained within Lake County is a landscape of moutains, valleys, and vistas of Clear Lake. The region also enjoys a number of monolithic alluvial fans.
Look for craggy, rocky, mountainous regions when shopping for wine. Geology is often the key to drinking better quality wine within your budget. No need to crack the college text books, just look for indications of orogeny on the label.
