Stylish Italians
Perfect for Summer Fare
In-Store Tasting 6/3
Stop by on Thursday, from 4:30pm to 7:00pm,
to taste a collection of wines from Vigna Dogarina Vineyards.
=> Prosecco is a zesty, bubbly treat.
Effervescent with flavors of pear and peaches with a twinkle of mineral.
Perfect acidity complements the fruity profile, creating balance.
Great to keep on hand for those moments when a glass of sparkling wine is appropriate.
Try it with fresh fruit, sushi, or spicy Italian sausage.
=> The pinot grigio is a wonderful thirst quencher.
Ripe with flavors of melon and yellow apples, it is a perfect pair for
lighter fare, such as grilled salmon, chicken, or marinated grilled veggies.
To keep its fresh flavor it is fermented in stainless steel.
=> The red blend is a combination of cabernet sauvignon and raboso,
a native grape of the Veneto region.
Raboso has been cultivated in the region for hundreds of years.
It adds deep color to a wine and a notable grip.
This red is filled with flavors of berries, pie cherries, and smoke.
It is savory and ripe, with a structure built for food.
Aged in large barrels, the wine offers a soft polish on the finish.
This wine begs for a steak or juicy hamburger.
Its tannic edge makes it a great pair of cheeses as well.
=> Finally, the cabernet sauvignon and merlot blend
is a sultry, smooth blend, boasting flavors of red raspberries and licorice.
Complex and extracted it enjoys French oak barrel aging.
This polished beauty would be a wonderful pair with roasted meats, or
pasta dishes with red sauce.

Prosecco - A stylish Italian
It is unusual to name a wine after its grape in most of Europe. Most wines from France, Spain, Portugal, and Italy are named after the region, rather than the grapes used to produce the wine.
The new world names wine after the grape, along side of the producer's name. In Europe, the producer's name is used, but it is common to find the regional name prominently featured on the label, while the producer is much smaller. There is no better example of this than Italy. The producer's name on a bottle of Italian wine is often insignificant, while the regional name is large.
Europeans believe land and weather are the most important assets in producing wine. This aspect of the land is called terroir and is more important than anything else, including grape variety, pedigree of the producer, or vigneron's reputation.
There is another wine labeling convention in Europe that drives home terroir is valued above all. When the wine is produced in a patchwork across an area, the style of wine itself is declared a region, even if the production areas are not contiguous.
A great example of this is Cava. Spanish Cava is an official name for a collection of areas producing sparkling wine in the Eastern Iberian Peninsula. Another example of this practice is Prosecco. Prosecco is in fact the name of a grape, grown in the Veneto region of Northern Italy. Prosecco is also considered a regional name for the sparkling wine made with the grape of the same wine.
The villages within the official region of Prosecco are Conegliano and Valdobbiadene. Any sparkling wine within these regions can use their village name instead of Prosecco on the label. Most producers use the name Prosecco because of its world wide recognition.
The Prosecco grape has been cultivated in Italy since the time of the Roman Empire. It is suspected Phiny the Elder sang Prosecco's praises centuries ago. Prosecco is a simple, yet delicious substitute for Champagne, often at a fraction of the price. Prosecco is also known for its stylish presentations. Sleek bottles, artistic labels, and whimsical closures indicate the Italians show their pension for style in more than just clothing and cars.
