In-Store Tasting 6/10

Stop by on Thursday, from 4:30pm to 7:00pm, to taste a collection of wines from Clayhouse Wines in Paso Robles.

=> The white blend is a blend of 22% viognier, 18% sauvignon blanc, 17% grenache blanc, 16% roussanne, 6% chardonnay and 5% chenin blanc and 16% princess. A golden straw color, and fine floral notes of orange blossom, lemon citrus and rose petal. Pear, peach and honeydew melon aromas jump from the glass. The creamy mouthfeel comes from a short time on the lees. The mouthwatering fruit flavors are of apple and stone fruit, with nuances of pumpkin pie spice and tea. The finish is crisp, but balanced with a touch of residual sugar.
=> The red blend is a blend of 44% zinfandel, 32% petite sirah, 16% syrah, 5% malbec, 4% grenache and 2% mourvedre. Ripe flavors of cherry, plum and vanilla bean, with rich spicy blueberry and cherry notes fill the mouth. The tannins are supple, and the balanced oak character adds additional vanilla notes.
=> Malbec might be the forgotten varietal of Bordeaux, but it is ideal when you are thirsting for something dark, bold and full of flavor. It is a wine that adeptly balances fruit and zippy acidity with hints of vanilla oak. Our new Malbec is dark and rich, with black plum, raspberry and cranberry aromas. There's a hint of black pepper to complement the vanilla oak. It's fruit-forward in the mouth, with an extended finish of soft tannins and spice.
=> Finally, the cabernet sauvignon is driven by red fruit flavors (cherry and plum), complemented with dusty oak, coffee, and slight green olive nuances. It is rich and soft in the mouth, with a toasty, dry finish of fine, dusty tannins. Another tasty gem from this Paso Robles producer.

Paso Robles
The West Coast of the United States has become a behemoth of wine making. It started a century ago in the fertile valleys of California and spread from there. Recently, any region that could grow grapes was considered as a potential new growing region from the Mexican to Canadian border.
When Franciscan Monks arrived as missionaries in the late eighteen century, in what would be eventually called California, they immediately began planting grapes from their homeland, Spain. Many speculate what varieties were planted. The most prevalent variety, called mission, was a generic name for varieties used to make sacramental wine in Europe. It is believed these varieties were the grape species vitis vinifera, the preferred wine grape from Europe. The native grape variety, vitis lambrusca is not a good candidate for winemaking, but survives the ravages of the root chewing louse called phyloxera. Vinifera, with its smaller root diameter succumbs to phyloxera within a few years. Perhaps the soil in California was relatively free of the louse at this time, which is why vinifera grapes were grown there for better than a century.
While the missionaries were busy growing grapes and making wine, it would be another one hundred years before commercial winemaking would be initiated in Paso Robles. After the Gold Rush of the mid-nineteenth century, areas around California became flush with money. By the 1870s Andrew York began planting vinifera vines in the land around Paso Robles. York named his facility and vineyards Ascension Winery, which is known as the York Mountain Winery today. This legendary, historical working winery is within the York Mountain American Viticultural Area (AVA).
Grape growing and wine making in Paso Robles was slow, but steady for another one hundred years. It experienced an exponential growth in the last two decades. Since 1990 plantings of Rhone Valley wine grape varieties have been impressive. Syrah from Paso Robles has become an icon. Mourvedre, grenache, cinsault, carignane, roussanne, marsanne, and viognier have found a new home in the sunny, rolling hillsides of Paso Robles County. Zinfandel, a grape originally from the Mediterranean, is another variety flourishing in Paso Robles as well.
Many think Paso Robles is too warm to grow the grapes of Bordeaux and Burgundy, but Paso Robles has a myriad of micro-climates. The region enjoys a cool maritime climate, with ocean breezes and significant daily temperature ranges. It has semi-arid conditions, but other areas experience rainforest like precipitation. Savvy growers understand the potential of their terroir and many grow remarkable chardonnay, cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, malbec, and merlot.
Wines from Paso Robles are ripe and generous. Many producers have been showered with accolades and are able to carve out an impressive slice of the market share. Paso Robles has hundreds of producers on its rolls today. Clayhouse Wines are some of the best examples of what the region can offer.
