Spring is almost here!
Last week we touched on a little history in the California wine industry.
This week we again sample wines from a family winery with
more than a century of growing grapes and making wine.
Peirano Estate has a history in Lodi that spans four generations.
'In 1879, with only fifty dollars in his pocket, Giacomo Peirano, a grape farmer from Genoa,
Italy, immigrated to San Francisco in the hopes of fulfilling the American dream
of striking it rich during the historic Gold Rush.
Soon realizing the big gold strikes were rare,
he decided to open up a mercantile store in the mining camps of Lodi.
The idea turned out to be a money maker and before he knew it,
Giacomo was back to Italy to retrieve his Maria.
Along with his smitten bride, Giacomo brought back with him
zinfandel cuttings from his family's vineyard.
He purchased 300 acres of land for the zinfandel,
creating one of the first vineyards in Lodi.
Around 1914, Giacomo Peirano retired.
He passed the 300 acres of land and the mercantile business to his sons,
Charlie, William, and George.
George and Charlie were mostly involved with the vineyards,
and William oversaw the mercantile business.
Charlie was called to fight in World War I from which he received a Purple Heart.
In 1920, the government declared Prohibition on alcohol.
For many grape farmers and winemakers this was a financial
disaster they were never able to recover from.
The Peirano found a legitimate work-around,
by selling their fruit to home winemakers
in New York and Canada.
Though they were able to turn a profit during Prohibition,
the nationwide financial epidemic of the Great Depression did not treat them as kindly.
There were times of starvation, fears of losing their land,
and endless uncertainty about the future.
Eventually, they were able to persevere and hold on to their land,
making it through the most difficult financial period in Peirano family history.
The winery enjoyed the boom of the post WWII economy.
In 1951, George passed away.
Randy Randolph, husband of Charlie's daughter Charlotte,
began learning the ins and outs of the business.
Eventually, Randy took over for Charlie, with the help of Charlotte,
continuing the family lineage in the vineyard business.
They would keep their young son Lance
with them in the vineyards, teaching him the art of growing grapes.
Eventually Lance learned winemaking, carrying on the passion for wine
Giacomo Peirano brought to Lodi over one hundred years ago.'
We sample wine four wines from Peirano Estate Vineyards.
