In-Store Tasting 3/25

This week we feature wines from South Africa. South Africa is a newcomer in the global wine market. It has been making wine for hundreds of years, however. It was controlled by cooperatives for the last century, which focused on quantity, rather than quality. Although the cooperatives are still around, small producers are popping up everywhere in South Africa. Utilizing existing vineyards and doing a little bit of planting of their own, fresh ideas are being coupled with top quality wine grapes. South Africa has the pleasure of enjoying two coastal breezes. It also enjoys warm sunny days and cool nights, the perfect weather for growing wine grapes.

The New World Explodes with Flavor

For thousands of years, the wine drinking consumer of French, Italian, Spanish, and German wines was usually no more than a day's ride away from where the grapes were grown. Sometimes Bordeaux or Burgundy would be schlepped further, but for the most part, the wine was consumed within a hundred kilometers of where the grapes were grown.
As soon as Europeans were able to cross long expanses of ocean, wine grapes were being planted in the new world. Vitis Vinifera grapes were not native to these new, exotic places. South America, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand grew spectacular grapes and made respectable wine. But it would take hundreds of years for Europeans and the rest of the world to enjoy these new world wines.
There was no refrigerated shipping in the seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth century. New world wine expired by the time it reached its audience in London, Paris, Dublin, Hamburg, Liverpool, and Madrid. But no one cared, because after all, there was plenty of wine produced a short distance away, the new world wines were not necessary.
In the advent of refrigerated shipping, wine was brought from Europe to the new world, instead of the other way around. Many of these new world regions, including the United States, experimented with temperance and stopped growing wine grapes. Then a pair of World Wars displaced the wine that would have been crossing the seas to Europe for more practical cargo. After the war was over, European wines were still featured on the shelves of these new world countries, but that was soon to change. Vinifera vines were being planted all over the globe.
Some of the new world regions have only been a contender in the global market for a few decades, others still for only a few years. The United States began earning accolades in the 1980s. Australia began shipping to eager wine drinkers in Europe and beyond in the 1990s. South American wines began to find their place on our shelves in the late 1990s. New Zealand began showing a strong presence globally in the new millennium. South Africa found success exporting wine to the rest of the world in just the last decade as well.
The new world has taken a bite out of European exports over the last thirty years. Now more than ever before, old world wines are competing with wine grown thousands of miles away, made by first generation winemakers. New world wines are ripe and high in alcohol. They are brimming with oak flavors and are very fruit forward, often with diminished tannins. Consumers expect new world wines to be made from one French grape variety alone and require that grape name be on the label. The growing region is on the label, but the wine is never called by its appellation.
You could drink a different wine from the new world every night of the week and spend years never running out of new labels or new vintages. Australia, Chile, Argentina, California, Washington, South Africa, and New Zealand all have ample sun. The grapes are the same as those grown in Europe, the approach to winemaking is fresh, fruity, and focused on the consumer.
