The Grapes of Burgundy

Burgundy has been a wine region for at least 1,000 years. About 1000 AD monks surveyed and mapped the vineyards of this area, declaring their stature by preserving the village name for dozens of generations to come.
Bourgogne, the French name for Burgundy, became one of the most sought after wines in the world for hundreds of years. Those who could afford the best would appoint a high bounty on these wines, which caused their reputation to echo across Europe and beyond. The white wines of Burgundy were made with chardonnay. The red wines of Burgundy were made with pinot noir.
The Europeans have an unwavering tradition of using the village name as the name of the wine, regardless of the varieties used to make the wine. The larger growing region would usually grow the same grapes and if you were a wine drinker, you knew that cabernet sauvignon, merlot, and cabernet franc grew in Bordeaux, chardonnay and pinot noir were cultivated in Bourgogne, sangiovese was the main grape in Chianti, and tempranillo grew in Rioja. You didn't need the grape name on the label; the regional name implied the contents of the bottle.
When the new world exploded with wine grape vines, the newly relocated growers looked to the varieties of their homelands. As consumers became more wine savvy, the demand for French varieties grew. Eventually, everyone was growing chardonnay and attempting to grow pinot noir. As time passed and the new world began producing millions of liters of wine with the grape name on the label, the fact that pinot noir and chardonnay were originally Bourgogne became a lost detail. This is why some inexpensive Burgundies list the grape name on the label, to guarantee sales in the US.
Chardonnay is grown everywhere in the new world. Now even some old world regions, growing their own unique white varieties, are planting chardonnay to keep up with the Joneses. While chardonnay grows like a weed, pinot noir is one of the fussiest vines to grace the planet. One is friendly and tolerant; the other is temperamental and thin-skinned.
Now that everyone has a taste for chardonnay and pinot noir, the demand for them is significant. Growing pinot noir is an endeavor that can prove to be futile. Regions that grow quality pinot noir capitalize on their good fortune. Chardonnay from these regions is exceptional as well. The United States is fortunate to have a handful of areas suitable for pinot noir. Sonoma, including the Russian River Valley, is graced with the weather pinot noir loves. Monterey is another area growing quality pinot noir grapes. Oregon's Willamette Valley can claim this grape as well.
Pinot noir's harvests can change significantly from vintage to vintage. This is why tasting the pinot before you buy it can be invaluable. If you are a lover of pinot noir, sampling the wine ahead of time can give you a formidable advantage.
